July's Topic

I am short of ideas of what our next topics would be. Maybe you pen your own thought of topics you'd like to be discussed in our blog. THose whose topics are selected would get a special prize.

Okay! We welcome your new ideas!

May's Winner

Hmmm...the topic for May didn't receive many participation from you folks out there. I wonder why.

Well, I did my sharing during the NE lecture about studying skills. THat's my way of studying. But I have honestly truly did a real form of studying when I was in Junior College. There was so much to learn at that time and working at the last minute will never work. So I really had to organise my time wisely and plan my schedules. I also didn't do very well during my Preliminary examination and that triggered me to work harder.

I think there are three types of people in this world. Those who are born smart. They are the geniuses in this world who do not need to spend their time studying because everything that they read will be at the tip of their fingers and recalling facts is as easy as reciting the ABC.

The second group are those who are smart only because they work at being smart. I fall into this group and many of you are. You'll need to work to be smart. There is never really 'I do not need to study and I have done well'. It is how much you have retained what you learnt in class and how able are you to display that understanding. Many of us are only at least 60% attentive in class. So most of the time, we'll need to spend time revising.

The third group are those who are without the blessing of academic intelligence. I say academic because there are many other things that they can be good at but they are definitely unsuccessful in school. With hard work, this group may even grow to become successful businessmen or tycoons. They are risk takers who have nothing to lose.

Well, the bottom line is hard work and success never comes without effort. Whatever was the outcome in Semester One, there is always Semester Two and even 2009...2010..2011. Well, if you fail, pick yourself up again. A failure is not a sign that it is the end of your world. In fact it is only a sign of a new resolution to improve oneself towards betterment.

Thank you Hui Ying for sharing your very down to earth and effective approach to studying. YOU are the winner for the month of May!

May Day! May Day! May Day! I Need Help!

Hello everyone! It's a 'dangerous' period for some of you as the results are out and you are in the danger zone. What danger you say? Danger of not doing well and getting slaughtered by your parents.

I'd like to hear from you about your study method. How have your prepared for this exams and many others before? Is preparation for examinations about reading your textbooks only? Is it about attending tuition after tuition and tuition? What about in attempting examinations? Are they special things that we need to do so that we reduce that carelessness? Or do those things even matter?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

April's Winner

Thank you for all your comments...and repeated comments. We have 47 comments but as some of you were smart enough to see, it was due to repeated comments. No problem though. Not an issue at all. We had Feng Yin, Jianqiu who joined our discussion. Thank you and Natalie who wrote an apology but did not put in her point of view...hmmm wonder why? And yes, where IS Flora? Wei Heng? Shaoqi?

I think the topic for April had opened up some kind of Pandora's Box for some of us.I have seen how we were pointing fingers calling someone or another person a bully. We have also some confessions from people who had seen themselves as a bully to others.

It is true what Hui Ying has said about bullies wanting to bully another so that they appear as if they are stronger than another. From Kristian's confessions, we saw how this was true. It was his way of retaliating or to show that he is not weak.

We have heard from Mrs Soh of the many many examples of bullying that is happening around school. Primary Six boys extorting money from the lower primary pupils are just ways of bullying. But Ebelle was right to say that you must inform a trusted adult. If you are being bullied, you should not just keep quiet and accept the hurtful words, you should take actions to stop them. Otherwise, the bully will get away with his hurtful ways and hurt others.

I have spoken to many of you regarding the act of bullying. What I have found is that some of you are clueless that what you have done is a form of bullying. Sometimes, you say and do things that hurt others but you are not aware of it. Most of you just get carried away and, without realising it, do things that are hurtful to others.

My rule of thumb is to check within ourselves. Would I like it if others say those things about me? Would I like it if others do those things to me? Would I like it if others call me names? Would I like it if others hit me with things? If we say no to those things, then we should not act that way towards others. Do unto others what we want others to do unto us.

Thank you again for the wonderful comments. I have learnt a lot from all of you. The winner for this month's topic will be Ebelle for her suggestion to inform an adult when the act of bullying happened to us. Congratulations Ebelle!

April Fool's

April Fool was yesterday. How many of you got yourself fooled by your friend? How did it feel to be the butt of the joke?

I suppose some jokes can be harmless fun. But what if the joke continues on and on even after April first? What if you become the laughing stock of everyone for the next week? What does that mean?

I'm actually talking about bullying. What is bullying? What do you understand by that word 'bullying'? How does bullying differ from joking about a friend or making fun of others? Is there a difference?

Have you been bullied? Or have you bullied others before? Would you know if you are being a bully?

I raised this topic because it has been another concern that I have observed in the class. Will discuss it in detail when I have your input.

Lastly, can some of you snazzy bloggers inform the other 'sleeping' members to share their thoughts. If I can name names.....Jianqiu, Wei Hao, Wen Hao, Shaoqi, Wenqi, Natalie....and the list goes on. I'm still waiting for the day that I received 42comments.

March's Reflection

It has been a busy March that I didn't get to post a second topic although I had planned for it.

In last month's topic, I found two strong discussions in Qi Qing's and Mumthaj's comments. Both had supported their arguments with their own real life experience and that made their comments more meaningful. However, as I could only select one winner, I have selected Mumthaj as the winner for March. Thank you Mumthaj for the excellent example you gave on the sacrifice your mum had made for you.

I think it is very true how mother's are willing to make sacrifices for their children. Being a mother, I too, sorry if sounds 'cliche', would climb mountains to help my son. However, I would like you to reflect and observe, how many of these 'children' are actually willing to sacrifice their time, attention and love for their parents when they are already old, crippled and weak? I suppose we will discuss to this topic again when you embark on your CIP to the old folks soon.

Meanwhile, congratulations Mumthaj!

Debate topic

This house believes that maids are better than mothers.

For everyone's information, Hui Ying, Joseph, Kristian and Xue Xian are participating in a National Debating competition next Wednesday. We are competing against Nanyang Primary on the first round. If we succeed, we will go on to the second round on the same day. We are in the midst of our preparation and I hope you can give them your strong support and encouragement.

The motion for the second debate is as above. We will be the opposition, so we will be opposing the motion. We need you to be the devil's advocate and give comments on why you agree with the motion and why maids are better than mothers.

Post your comments as early as possible. This topic will only last for a week before we get to the next one. There will be one winner for the person who gives us a strong point in supporting the motion.

February's Winner

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate all those who have participated actively in our discussion. Without you people, this blog would not work. We must find a way to get the other 25 'missing' people to log on.

Your ideas have shown maturity and thoughtfulness in the way you have expressed the. These are good as these are gems that you will use in you oral conversation during the oral examination. Don't feel that you are limited by the topic, just speak your mind.

My heartiest congratulation will be to Xue Xian for his comments. How are his different from the rest? Many of you speak of competition as those amongst your friends, as in the school context but in Xue Xian's he is speaking in real life terms and how do we react if we are actually competing with others? Shake their hands and congratulate them when they win. If you watch sport channels on television, this is what you would observe before and after a game. Winner or loser, we all have to behave like good sports persons.

A special commendation would be Kristian's comments. Thank you for your thoughts, Kristian. It was excellent too.

For our next topic, it'll be something that we need everyone's brain juice.

The Competitor in Me

Thanks for those thirteen who participated in our last topic! Congratulations to TingKiat for winning January's 'Thought of the Month'.

In February, I'd like to talk about competition. I think I've said before that I am a competitive person. I'd also like to work hard to win something. But we have heard the phrase 'Winning isn't everything.' I'd like to hear from you. What is your take on competition? Do you enjoy competing? What do you compete in? How do you feel if you or your team loses? Does it matter? If winning isn't everything...what is?

Finally, remember to update your blogs. I've been looking and for some of you, there is need to work on jazzing it up!

Being in Primary Five

I' sure you are graoning and moaning about the amount of work that you are having in Primary Five. How is it different from being in Primary Four? Is there any difference in the way your parents are treating you now that you are ELEVEN?! Or do you feel that you are more responsible now that you are suppose to be older. Post your comments here.
